Process to standardise Marathi at international level on: Vinod Tawde

Announcing that the process to bring Marathi language on Unicode by approaching Unicode Consortium was on, minister for Marathi language Vinod Tawde on Saturday said that this would help the language to get standardised at the international level.

He was speaking at a special programme organised to mark Marathi Rajbhasha Din (Marathi Language Day) on Saturday. Every year, February 27 is celebrated as Marathi Rajbhasha Din to mark the birth anniversary of the first Dnyanapeeth award winner in Marathi Kusumagraj Vishnu Waman Shirwadkar. During the programme, Babytai Gaikwad from Ahmednagar was felicitated with late Mangesh Padgaonkar award while Maxim Bernsen from Faltan was felicitated with Dr Ashok Kelkar award for Marathi language research. The Shri Ou Bhagwat award was given to Continental Prakashan of Pune while the life time achievement award in the memory of late Vinda Karandikar was handed over to RG Jadhav.

Tawde informed that the Marathi language department is working on various projects so that it can be brought out of the bureaucratic network. He added that while providing prime time for Marathi movies in multiplexes, the government also provided space for selling Marathi books at municipal corporation premises and other local body offices. Tawde informed that a total of five lakh documents in Modi script from Tanjavur have been turned into digital format and government has also made available 353 Marathi books of Sahitya Sanskruti Mandal in e-books form on the government website free of cost.

Composer Kaushal Inamdar presented a show 'Marathinama', depicting the history and journey of Marathi language. Baba Bhand, Shrikant Bahulkar, Dr Sadanand More were present for the programme.
