There's fresh trouble for Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam as the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Wednesday informed the Madras High Court that it is conducting a preliminary inquiry into the complaints of disproportionate wealth accumulated by the AIADMK leader and his family members.

Appearing before Justice G Jayachandran, Advocate General Vijay Narayan also informed the court that the investigation was ordered on July 18. The court was hearing petitions filed by DMK's Rajya Sabha MP RS Bharathi and NGO Arappor Iyakkam, which sought a CBI probe into the charges. The DVAC's response comes in the wake of the court slamming it for not conducting a probe even after three months of the complaint.

Recording the AG's submission, Justice Jayachandran closed the petition and directed the petitioners to approach the court if they found fault with future investigations.

In his plea in March, Bharathi had alleged that the value of the properties owned by Panneerselvam's wife Vijayalakshmi has increased from Rs 24.20 crore in 2011 to Rs 78 crore in 2016, even though she "is a housewife and had no source of income" raising doubts about the source of properties' acquisition.
