Weeks after laying the foundation stone for a museum for 'all prime ministers' at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML), Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reconstituted its society to replace four of its members. Pratap Bhanu Mehta, who had resigned from the membership of NMML Society, has been replaced by Republic TV's Arnab Goswami.

Including Goswami, the four new members who replace existing members are, Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, former journalist and head of Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts board Ram Bahadur Rai and former diplomat S Jaishankar. While Sahasrabuddhe replaces professor Udayon Mishra, Jaishankar has been brought in place of bureaucrat BP Singh, and Ram Bahadur Rai replaces economist Nitin Desai.

An order, released October 29 by the ministry of culture announcing the appointments, states that the memorandum of association and rules and regulations of the NMML stipulates their terms till April 26, 2020.

The replacement comes after the NMML faced resistance in the forming of the museum of all PMs. Both Singh and Desai had sounded their disagreements over the formation of the museum. Speaking to reporters, NMML director Shakti Sinha said that the new appointees will help the NMML develop into a centre of research as per the views of the present government.

"This is part of a bigger plan to make NMML a centre of research. Ram Bahadur Rai has been commenting on the Indian political scene for the last 50 years. He personally knew some of the PMs. Jaishankar will bring an insight into how decisions are made at the top and Goswami, as a senior journalist and a scholar in his earlier days, will also contribute immensely to our plans of creating a database of research and information on Indian political history," said Sinha.
