Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday condoled the passing away of legendary Bollywood and Marathi actor Sadashiv Amrapurkar, who died in the early hours of the day at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.

The 64 year-old actor was being treated for a lung infection.

"We will remember Sadashiv Amrapurkar as a versatile actor, popular across generations. RIP. My deepest condolences to his family," Prime Minister Modi tweeted.

According to reports, Amrapurkar's last rites will be performed at his native place in Ahmednagar District on Tuesday.

Amrapurkar had won two Filmfare awards, one as best supporting actor in the 1984 film 'Ardh Satya', and the second as best villain for the role of a ruthless eunuch in the 1991 film 'Sadak'.

His other prominent works included 'Aankhen', 'Ishq', 'Coolie No. 1' and 'Gupt: The Hidden Truth'.

He later shifted his focus to Marathi movies. Amrapurkar was last seen on the big screen in 2012 film 'Bombay Talkies'.

He had become selective and was more into social work in the last few years.
