Senior TMC MLA Paresh Pal courted controversy on Monday when he shouted at three GJM MLAs and asked them to "go back to Darjeeling" during the voting for presidential elections in Kolkata. The MLAs and MPs of all political parties queued up inside the state Assembly to cast their votes in the 14th presidential election on Monday, long before the process began at 10 am.

It was mostly the MLAs of the ruling TMC who had arrived early and later on when members of other political parties came over, they were seen chatting in a friendly manner in a queue at the assembly lobby, with camerapersons clicking away photographs.

At about midday, Paresh Pal, TMC MLA from Beleghata lashed out at the three Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) MLAs – Amar Rai, Saritha Rai and Rohit Sharma – accusing them to be behind the unrest at the hills. “After setting fire at the hills you have come here to cast your votes. Why don't you go back to the hills?” he said. In reply, Rai said, “Why don't you go to the hills and say that?”

Heated exchange of words continued for a few minutes when Pal verbally attacked BJP state president Dilip Ghosh when Ghosh said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was responsible for the violence at the hills. “His party is fanning violence at the hills and now he has brought here the ill-behaved people from the hills who cannot even speak politely. We are Mamata Banerjee’s soldiers that is why wanted to teach them a lesson,” Pal said and pointing finger at Ghosh he added, “It is Mamata’s generosity that you are here today. You are not fit to be any political party’s spokesperson.”

Talking to mediapersons later, Pal said that he did not regret what he had said and would say it again if need be. Referring to Pal’s behaviour, Rai, later, told reporters that it was ‘very childish’. “We have come to vote and we will be back. We are aware of the bandh. We know our responsibilities. We are colleagues. We should have mutual respect for each other. There are political differences but I think there are other ways to settle those. Shouting and accusing only show their mentality,” Rai said.

Ghosh said that he had never seen such politics. “Such language and tone! I have not witnessed such politics. It shows the frustration of the leaders of the ruling party,” he said and taking a dig at the previous cordial relationship of the state government with the GJM leaders, he said, “If you are unable to continue with friendship, why do you make friends with people?”
