The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Supremo Mayawati has announced support to the UPA candidate Meira Kumar for the upcoming Presidential Elections.

Mayawati said that that after comparing both the NDA and UPA candidates, her party found Meira Kumar more competent and suitable for the coveted post. Earlier, she had welcomed the BJP's move to field a Dalit, Ram Nath Kovind as the NDA candidate for the Presidential polls.

But, on support to NDA nominee, she had remained non-committal. “The BSP will wait for the UPA to clear its stand. We will take a final decision only after the UPA meeting on June 22,” she had said.

After UPA decided to field former Lok Sabha Speaker and a known Dalit face Meira Kumar as the front candidate, Mayawati did not waste time to announce her support. Mayawati, however, stayed away from the crucial UPA meeting on Thursday to decide the front candidate. “I had sent my party General Secretary Satish Chandra Mishra with specific instructions to the UPA meeting. Now since UPA has fielded a better Dalit candidate, BSP will support Meira Kumar during the presidential polls,” she announced on Thursday.
