President Pranab Mukherjee will deny the proposal informally floated by the opposition parties to become a candidate for the next Presidential elections. Sources close to the President indicated that he is not interested to become the candidate for the opposition. Sources said that the news is incorrect and he has not shown any inclination towards the proposal.

The opposition on the other hand wanted Pranab Mukherjee to be the candidate because he would have galvanised the smaller parties against BJP.  In his absence, the opposition will have to hunt for a credible candidate which is not available yet.

In all probability, unaligned regional parties will vote for the candidate supported by BJP. The mirage of of opposition unity is likely to break soon as non-Congress leaders don't want a Presidential candidate from the Congress stable .

On the other hand, Congress President Sonia Gandhi wants to use Presidential elections as an occasion to unite the opposition parties against BJP. It is for this reason, she is open to a non-Congress nominee as the candidate for President. With Pranab Mukherjee not interested, Congress and others have their task cut out. The Congress-led Opposition don't have the numbers on their side but they want to put up a credible fight. Can they do so is the million dollar question.
