In a humanitarian gesture, a CRPF team helped a 29-year-old pregnant tribal woman reach a primary health centre by risking their lives in the Naxal- infested Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh, where she gave birth to twin baby girls.

The 204th CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action)- an elite unit of CRPF, carried the woman in their vehicle to Basaguda hospital, which is around seven kms from their camp, after clearing the way by deploying a road opening party as the route passed through the Maoist-dominated jungle area. Briefing about the incident, Public Relations Officer, CRPF (Chhattisgarh Headquarter) VVN Prasanna said that residents of Mandimarka village, situated at a distance of 11 kms south-east from Tarem camp, came carrying the woman, Sukko Telam, on bedstead and called for help at the CoBRA battalion company situated there.

Tarem is located seven kms deep inside jungle from Basaguda police station in south Bastar. "On seeing the condition of the pregnant woman, Assistant Commandant Akhilesh Kumar Choubey of the unit and his jawans immediately arranged the road opening party to ensure a safe passage of the woman to Basaguda primary health centre for medical assistance risking their lives in the Naxal hit area," he said.

Besides, another team of CRPF was ready with medical staff for providing necessary medical assistance at Basaguda, where she was safely transported, he added. "After the woman was admitted and examined, doctors there said she may need blood, to which the paramilitary officer at the spot also assured that his jawans were ready to donate blood if needed," Prasanna, a commandant rank official, said.

The woman then delivered twin baby girls and their condition was said to be fine, he said, adding that the woman and her babies are kept under observation. "Villagers of Mandimarka with all their hearts appreciated and shown sincere gratitude to the help and work of 204 CoBRA which is no less than an achievement for us," Prasanna added.
