Two days after he sparked a furore on social media through tweets questioning the need for mosques to use loudspeakers for azaan, singer Sonu Nigam on Wednesday, in true Bollywood vein, shaved his head during a press conference at his Versova residence. This, he said, was in response to a reward that was announced by a Maulvi in West Bengal for anyone who managed to shave the singer's head.

At the press conference, the actor was asked about the use of loudspeakers at his concerts, and whether he was annoyed by the timing of the early morning azaan. The singer, however, said that the controversy had arisen because his tweets had been misconstrued. The media should play a responsible role, he added.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi, the vice-president of the West Bengal Minority United Council, had said, "If anyone can shave his (Nigam's) hair, put a garland of old torn shoes around his neck and tour him around the country, I personally announce an award of Rs 10 lakh for that person."

Before the press conference on Wednesday, Nigam tweeted that the Maulvi should keep his Rs 10 lakh ready, as his head would be shaved. "I cannot believe that I am being targeted when I am secular. I have considered Mohammed Rafi as a father, and my ustad is also a Muslim. Talaat Aziz has performed Namaz at my place," said Nigam. He added that he had called his friend Allim, who is a Muslim, to shave his head.

On being questioned about the use of loudspeakers at his concerts disturbing people, the singer said, "The use of loudspeakers at my shows stops at 10 pm. The police stops their use."
