Post-Diwali communal clashes grip Trilokpuri, East Delhi; 35 severely injured, 5 sustain bullet injuries

The communal clashes in Trilokpuri, East Delhi continued on Sunday into its third day. At least 35 people including 14 policemen have been severely injured. According to the police, five people sustained bullet injuries. The clashes started on October 24, Friday and was triggered by a jagran that was held in front of a mosque in Trilokpuri.

According to an Indian Express report, prohibitory orders under Section 144 were imposed on Saturday night.

According to a police officer, objections were raised by local Muslims against a jagran organised on the night of Diwali in front of a mosque inTrilokpuri, reported Firstpost. Police said that an altercation between two groups turned violent as people resorted to stone pelting. Nobody, however, was hurt in the incident, police said, adding that a case of rioting has been registered in connection with the clash with some persons having been booked in the matter. 

After late night clashes on Friday, fresh stone pelting was reported from the area on Saturday morning after which additional force for neighbouring districts have also been deployed in the area. The situation remained tense in the area and a heavy police contingent along with Rapid Action Force has been deployed in the area.

Residents have been fighting pitched battles and have also pelted stones on security personnel which has left at least 35 injured including 13 policemen. A number of vehicles have also been vandalised in the area by hooligans. "We have registered a case of rioting and other sections of IPC and 23 persons have been arrested so far. Combing operations are on and the situation is being monitored at the highest level," said a senior police official.

Clashes broke out again on Saturday night after which police used tear gas shells and resorted to mild use of force to control the situation.

Intelligence Bureau and other agencies are also keeping a watch on the situation of the area. Senior police officials are camping in the area and additional force from neighbouring districts have also been deployed in the area.

Meanwhile, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Arvinder Singh expressed serious concern over the clashes in Trilokpuri and appealed to the people to maintain peace. The DPCC, in a letter to the Delhi Police Commissioner, has asked him to immediately restore peace and order.

Chief spokesperson of the party Mukesh Sharma said that as the news of the clashes reached them, party leaders spoke to top police officials to get complete details of the clashes and appealed to the police to provide people security and protection.
