There has been a rise in drug abuse by the youngsters in Bihar ever since Chief Minister Nitish Kumar led JDU banned the use of alcohol in the state.

The worst-hit in the state is the border town of Kishanganj. Now that the alcohol is banned, drug barons have started to expand theor base in the state. Moreover, people are also searching for new options to satiate their addiction. According to recent reports, youths have also started consuming heroin now alongwith charas, ganja and opium.

This has also led to a staggering increase in the crime rate in the area. The youths have resorted to stealing money from their own houses as well as from other people to purchase drugs. The drug barons have been amassing huge profits as one packet of heroin costs Rs 150 and their daily consumers are the youth of the area.

DRUG PEDDLING

A team of police officers from Jakkanpur in Patna had confiscated nearly 25 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 50 lakh in the international market during a raid on September 14. An increase in the secretive supply and sale of narcotics like brown sugar has been observed in the state.

Speaking to this correspondent, Dr Akhilesh Kumar, Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Kishanganj said, "To prevent the drug menace prevalent in the area, the police and people should launch a combined effort. In addition to this, the parents should keep a close look on their children." He also said that local police have already arrested a lot of drug barons and further investigations are underway.

On November 26, 2015, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced that alcohol would be banned in the state from April 1, 2016.

Due to the liquor ban in Bihar, police regularly raid establishments suspected of housing drinkers of liquor or sites where they are illegally peddled. With total prohibition in place in Bihar, bootleggers are using school bags for smuggling and doorstep delivery of alcohol in the state.

The idea may have been picked up by them from the silver screen. Bihar Police have rounded up a number of high schools and college students for their alleged involvement in bootlegging of liquor in the state.
