The poll panel on Tuesday removed the Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar and replaced him with Soumen Mitra.
In a communication from the Election Commission of India to Nabanna - state secretariat, an official order said that the police chief had been removed.
All opposition parties - BJP, Congress and the Left had levelled allegations of biasness towards the ruling party - Trinamool Congress.
Kumar had made it to the headlines for his role as the top cop, probing the multi-crore-rupee Saradha scam. Kumar has been replaced by Mitra, who is currently serving as the ADG CID.
