With the unprecedented floods in poll-bound Jammu & Kashmir killing more than a 100 people, politicians are competing with each other to take credit for moving the wheels of administration to ameliorate the situation.

A day after BJP sent Dr Hina Bhat to Delhi to discuss the situation with Union agriculture minister Dr Radha Mohan, Congress swung into action, with leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad sending an SOS to prime minister Narendra Modi, and his rival, PCC chief Prof Saifudin Soz, issuing a statement on returning from Delhi, detailing his talks with the administration and Corp Commander Lt. General Saha.

And even as home minister Rajnath Sigh and minister of state Jitender Singh left for the state to take stock of the situation, in Delhi, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi appealed to the authorities to ensure that relief swiftly reached the needy. "My prayers are with the people of J&K," his message said.

And for a change, CM Omar Abdullah, ill-reputed for leaving people high and dry during critical situations, was seen leading from the front. He oversaw operations to rescue a 3-year-old till early on Saturday morning in the civil lines area in Srinagar. The previous night, he was out overseeing plugging of a possible river Jhelum breach some 200 yards from his residence. He had received a message that a massive Chinar tree had fallen on the river embankment. His cavalcade at one point was held in floods and mud, which was salvaged by the Army.
