Politicians’ firms indicted in Goa mining report

Several heavyweight of the mining industry and companies owned by important politicians in Goa figure among the companies that have been indicted in the Justice MB Shah Commission report on rampant illegal mining in the state.

The list includes names of companies owned by ex-MLA Anil Salgaocar and NCP state coordinator Dr. Prafulla R Hede. It also includes name of London listed Vedanta Group-owned Sesa Goa Ltd.

Other industry bigwigs, whose names also finds a mention in the report, are VM Salgaocar and Bro Pvt Ltd, Salgaocar Mining Industries owned by former MLA Anil Salgaocar, Damodar Mangalji & Company and Chowgule Mining Pvt Ltd.

Another prominent name, which is in the report, is of Dempo and Company Private Limited. However, in 2009 Vedanta’s Sesa Goa had acquired Dempo’s complete mining businesses.

Another important name, which finds a mention in the report, is that of Dr Prafulla R Hede, who was appointed as NCP’s state coordinator last year. He is apparently considered quite close to top bosses of the NCP. According to the report, he was operating a mine in Sanguem in South Goa.

The name of former MLA Anil Salgaocar, who was an important part of the last Goa government led by Congress’s Digambar Kamat, also finds a mention in the report. His mine is also alleged to have been found operating illegally by violating several norms. 

Shah commission in its report on illegal mining has also come down heavily on the Union ministry of environment and forests.

“This has paved way for large-scale irregularities, illegalities and corruption. The regulatory mechanism has totally collapsed and irregularities due to maladministration have risen to its peak,” it added.
