Tensions rose in the Kashmir Valley on Saturday after a video clip purportedly showed a bullet-proof mobile bunker mowing down a youth. The Jammu and Kashmir police first termed it an accident, only to detain the driver of the vehicle.

The 57-second footage was shot apparently during clashes between local and security personnel at Noor Bagh area following an encounter between militants and security forces in Chattabal area of Srinagar.

The video shows stone-pelters chasing two vehicles, including a bullet-proof mobile bunker which tries to manoeuvre to safety. However, when a youth, later identified as Adil Ahmad Yadoo, keeps chasing the first vehicle, the bunker runs over him and speeds away.

The police initially attributed the death to an accident and even cautioned people against the rumors. However, their version changed after the video went viral despite the suspension of mobile Internet.

SP Pani, inspector general of police, Kashmir zone, said they have taken action. "The police vehicle has been seized." The police said they have detained the driver of the mobile bunker and registered a case.

"Taking strong note of the death of a youth at Noorbagh by a police vehicle, the Chief Minister has directed the police to take legal cognizance of the incident and punish the guilty found involved in the incident," said an official spokesman.

Taking a strong note of the Noorbagh incident, officials said, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti directed the police to punish the guilty.

The Joint Resistance Leadership, an organisation of separatists, called the incident "cruel and brutal". A JRL spokesperson said, "What is worse is that after these murders they have the absolute brazenness to lie about it as in Adil's case saying that he died in a traffic accident. The heart-rending video clears shows how cruelly he was killed."

JRL has called for a complete shutdown on Sunday to protest the "killing".
