The Goa government on Monday informed the high court that they plan on forming a special investigation team (SIT) to tackle ‘matka’ gambling in the state. The SIT will be headed by a retired high court judge. The  state government have already begun discussions with retired Justice Lawande and are awaiting a confirmation from him.

It plans to constitute the SIT by this week and will subsequently submit the name of the officers on the panel to the high court by July 10.  The issue came to the forefront after an activist filed a PIL alleging that the police are turning a blind eye towards the illicit trade and judiciary intervention is required.
