A police complaint was filed against Union minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti on Wednesday for allegedly making communal remarks and using an expletive in an election rally here two days ago.

The complaint was filed at Tilak Nagar Police Station in west Delhi this evening by advocate Rajeev Kumar Bhola, a resident of west Delhi.

"We have received a complaint but it has to be examined whether it qualifies to be converted into an FIR," said a senior police official. The advocate, who filed the complaint, demanded that police should register an FIR under sections 153 (A), section 295 and 500 IPC against Jyoti.

"Our politicians have been increasingly using abusive public language and there is no control of their leadership over such utterances. Such things hurt the sentiments of the public. Action should be taken against the minister," said Bhola.

Meanwhile, the Opposition has been demanding the resignation of the 47-year-old Minister of state for food processing. On Tuesday, as the saffron-clad minister Jyoti sat in the House quietly looking at some papers, as opposition members demanded a statement from the prime minister, who was present in the House on Wednesday.

Around five rows behind prime minister Narendra Modi in Lok Sabha, union minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti sat looking oblivious of the storm over her remarks that has rocked Parliament.

Her day began as usual-- leaving home at 10.30 for Parliament– and she conducted her duties as minister of state for food processing. An active first time MP, she had participated in 18 debates against a national average of 4.9, in the first two sessions after the Modi government took over and recorded a 100 per cent attendance.

In Rajya Sabha, the government-opposition standoff paralysed business for the second day as a united opposition demanded her resignation for her abusive remarks.

The government has rejected the demand arguing that the matter should end as she has already apologised for her remarks and the prime minister has disapproved of the comments. As the Speaker continued to conduct Lok Sabha amidst the uproar, Parliamentary affairs minister M Venkaiah Naidu recalled earlier instances during the UPA rule when a central minister had allegedly made derogatory remarks against former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the then prime minister Manmohan Singh apologised as the minister had refused to do so. He also said TMC MP Tapas Pal had allegedly threatened CPM cadre and their family of rape and violence. Dissatisfied with the government response, the Opposition, including Congress, TMC and Left, staged a walkout.

In Rajya Sabha, where the government is in minority, opposition members demanded that the prime minister announce the minister's ouster. As the deadlock continued with the opposition and treasury side sparring at each other and members of the Congress, SP, JD-U, TMC and CPM trooping into the well of the House, there were four adjournments before lunch.
