The police busted a gang engaged in extortion and other illegal activities and arrested four persons including its leader from North Garo Hills district.

Mithun Momin, the leader of the gang had been on the run for the past few months was caught at about 2 am on Wednesday from a house he had rented in the town of Williamnagar. The arrest came after inputs of their presence in the area, the police said today.

Originally a resident of Kharkutta area under North Garo Hills, Mithun and his gang had been actively serving demand notes to businessmen most of which were not reported due to fear of reprisal.

"He has been active in extortion and other illegal activities and we are aware that the group has guns though the same is yet to be recovered. The four are currently being interrogated for information on their activities," said NGH Superintendent of Police, Dalton Marak.

The other persons arrested along with Mithun were Chengchak G Momin, Chingsan M Marak and Nasiruddin Marak.
