A major political storm has hit Jammu and Kashmir, after former chief minister and National Conference (NC) president Dr Farooq Abdullah said on Saturday that the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) belonged to Islamabad, and no war could alter this reality.

"I always make it very clear, not only to Indians but to the entire world, that the part which is with Pakistan now belongs to them. This part of Kashmir belongs to India. It will never change, no matter how many wars you wage," Abdullah told reporters at the sidelines of a function held at Nawa-i-Subh NC headquarters on Saturday.

Batting for autonomy for both parts of Kashmir, Abdullah said India and Pakistan needed to talk, so that people from both regions could live in peace.

"India has broken our trust. We showered love and joined hands with them, but they did not treat us fairly. Whatever miseries we are facing are because they back-stabbed the people of Kashmir," he said. "They should restore our internal autonomy and peace will return," he added.

Rejecting the idea of 'azadi', the former CM asserted that those who were demanding freedom were wrong. "Azadi is not the issue. We live in a landlocked place. There is China on one side and India and Pakistan on the other.

All of them have atom bombs and we have nothing except Allah. Those who talk of azadi are wrong," he said.

The former Union minister for new and renewable energy also noted that unless external dialogue with Pakistan was held, an internal dialogue will not resolve the issue.

"He (Centre's interlocutor Dineshwar Sharma) has held talks. But these talks will not solve the issue. This issue is between India and Pakistan. Talks should not only be held with the people of J&K but the government of India should also talk to Pakistani government, because a part of Kashmir is with them," he said.

Hitting out at the Union minister of state for home, Hansraj Ahir, over his remarks on accession, Abdullah said it was very strange that a minister in the Modi Cabinet refers to the Instrument of Accession while talking of PoK, but conveniently forgets the three conditions under which Maharaja Hari Singh had acceded to the Union of India.

"This is not only a negative approach but sets a dangerous precedence, where facts are deliberately being muzzled," he said.

The former CM's remarks evoked a sharp response from the BJP, which called it against the spirit of the unanimous resolution passed by the Parliament. "It is unfinished agenda of India to get back the areas that are under illegal occupation of Pakistan. Abdullah's statement is not only politically incorrect but against the Constitution. He has not read the Constitution of J&K, which states that the entire state, including the part occupied by Pakistan, is an integral part of India," said Sunil Sethi, chief spokesman of J&K state BJP.
