Congress continued its attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the fifth day in a row over the PNB-Nirav Modi-Mehul Choksi scam, thereby signaling that it considers denting PM’s anti-corruption image as a key harm to BJP’s prospects in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

A Congress source said despite some fall in popularity, Modi continues to remain a popular choice and concerted attacks on him is, perhaps, the best way to dislodge the BJP from power.

“PNB and Nirav Modi is by far the most important peg to attack. We will concentrate on it besides tagging other serious issues like Rafale,”said the party source.

Concentrating on this line of attack, Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari on Monday added a fresh revelation to the ongoing PNB fraud controversy and asked why the Modi government allowed Mehul Choksi to leave the country when was declared an absconder by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Chandigarh on August 4, 2017 in a case against Gitanjali Jewellery Retail Pvt. Ltd.

“The court of CJM Chandigarh had declared Choksi an absconder. There are other court orders too. The question is why the law enforcing agencies took action in time and he was allowed to exit the country?” said Tiwari.

Tiwari claimed that the ongoing raids are a smokescreen to create an illusion that the government is acting but it does not answer the main question on why the government did not act in time when its agencies were aware of the fraud and court orders.
