In another tragic incident related to the Maharashtra Cooperative (PMC) Bank, an 80-year old depositor died of heart attack as he was unable to withdraw money for his heart surgery.
Identified as Murlidhar Dhara, the victim was a resident of Mulund colony in northeast Mumbai and was suffering from a heart-related ailment for a long time.
He was to undergo bypass surgery at a hospital and needed to withdraw money from his account in the scam-hit PMC bank, which was placed under restrictions since September 24, 2019.
According to his son, Prem Dhara, doctors had recommended surgery to his father but they could not arrange proper treatment due to RBI's cap on withdrawals. He also added that he has an account in the bank.
This is the third incidence of death of depositors of the PMC Bank.
On Tuesday, a depositor named Fattomal Punjabi died of a heart attack. His family alleged that he was under stress following the crisis.
Another resident of Mumbai, Sanjay Gulati suffered from a cardiac arrest on Monday while he was participating in a protest rally by the depositors. He was unable to withdraw money for the treatment of his son who is specially-abled and undergoing medical treatment.
Gulati was a large depositor at the bank and had close to Rs 90 lakh in four accounts.
Last month, the RBI restricted the activities of the PMC Bank for six months and asked it to not grant or renew any loans and advances, make any investment or incur any liability, including borrowing of funds and acceptance of fresh deposits.
