PM Narendra Modi, who returned from the BRICS summit, tweeted about his phone conversation with German chancellor Angela Merkel, after an administrative goof-up prevented his meeting with Merkel from taking place.
Had a telephonic conversation with Chancellor Merkel. Wished her on her birthday & congratulated her on Germany's win at the FIFA World Cup.

Modi had made a stopover in Berlin en-route Brazil for the BRICS summit in Fortaleza. However, German chancellor Merkel had already flown out to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil for the FIFA World Cup Final between Germany and Argentina.
On his way back from the summit, Modi tweeted again:
Germany is India's valued friend & I look forward to working with Chancellor Merkel to make India's relations with Germany stronger.

It may also be recalled that the missed meeting with Merkel was not the only scheduling error committed by India. Modi was supposed to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Fortaleza, but Putin was held up in Brasilia in a meeting with Brazil president Dilma Rousseff.

Friday, July 18 is now celebrated as 'Mandela Day', for it is the late Nelson Mandela's birthday. Modi expressed his admiration for Mandela through Twitter:
Mandela Day is not only a day to remember the Great Man himself but also to reaffirm our commitment to work towards world peace.
