Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left government in Kerala on the Sabarimala issue, saying the Communists never respected Indian culture.

"The conduct of Kerala LDF government on Sabarimala issue will go down in history as one of the most shameful behaviours by any party and government. We knew that Communists do not respect Indian history, culture, and spirituality but nobody imagined that they will have such hatred," Modi said at a BJP rally here. The PM's event virtually sounded the poll bugle for the state BJP, which is trying to capitalise on the Sabarimala issue in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

He also slammed Congress-led UDF, describing it as another side of the same coin. Pointing to the Congress speaking in different voices on the Sabarimala issue, the PM said: "They say one thing in Parliament and another in Pathanamthitta (where the Lord Ayyappa shrine is located)."

The PM said the BJP would continue to uphold the religious and cultural traditions of Kerala, despite being confronted with the violence of the CPM. "For every bomb they throw on us, for every stone they hit at out workers, for each form of their violence, our resolve turns stronger to end their undemocratic rule," PM Modi said.

"Left and Congress make tall claims about respect to gender justice and social justice but their actions are exactly the opposite. The NDA government is working towards abolishing the Triple Talaq. Who is opposing us on this? Communists and the Congress," the PM said.

"A few days ago, our government had the historic opportunity to pass legislation that gives 10% quota to poor people from the general category. We believe that every Indian, irrespective of caste, creed or community deserves equal opportunity," he added.

PM Modi also declared open the much-awaited Kollam bypass on National Highway-66 here on Tuesday.
