Prime Minister Narendra Modi, known for pushing for infrastructural projects, has cracked the whip. He has asked his ministers to enhance existing infrastructure in their specific fields by at least 10% by the end of the financial year.

According to a major daily which published the news, the prime minister has even set up a tracking mechanism to ensure work is being done at a satisfactory pace. For now, the Planning Committee will keep a tab on the work done, and subsequently it will be done by the think tank that is set to replace the committee. Modi, in his early days in office, has been more proactive in setting the basics right rather than going after big ticket reforms, and this move seems to be congruent to that mindset.

Senior ministers believe that this move will help them to work more stridently to achieve their goals. Bureaucrats will be also be on their toes to expedite the process of decision making. Government offices over time have been known for dillydallying over files and Modi is looking to strike at that peril of bureaucracy.

If indeed ministers achieve and fulfill the minimum target, it can be a major fillip to infrastructure, which will subsequently augment the process of economic development. It will imply mobile connectivity for half the villages, literacy rate up to 80%, 500 kilometres of new railway tracks and 7,700 kilometres of new roads. This is considerably more than the internal target set by the Union ministers.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has already instructed the Planning Commission secretary to come up with a method of evaluating performance of the ministers with these new targets in place. Seems like Prime Minister Modi is quite a hard taskmaster willing to go the extra mile to get work out of his subordinates.
