In the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday unveiled three major projects in Andhra Pradesh — a 1.33 MMT Visakhapatnam Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) facility in Visakhapatnam, a coastal installation project at Krishnapatnam, and a S1 Vashishta development project located in the Krishna-Godavari offshore basin.
The projects will give a major push to the gas-based industrial units in Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring states apart from giving a boost to the energy security of the country, the Centre said in a statement.
The PM dedicated to the nation a 1.33 MMT Visakhapatnam Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) facility of Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve Limited (ISPRL) with an estimated cost of Rs 1,125 crore. The facility has the largest underground storage compartment in the country.
PM Modi also laid the foundation stone for setting up of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) coastal installation project at Krishnapatnam. The fully automated and state of the art coastal installation project, which will ensure security of the petroleum products, is spread over 100 acres. The estimated cost of the project, which will be commissioned by November 2020, is Rs 580 crore.
Further, the PM dedicated to the nation ONGC's S1 Vashishta development project located in the Krishna-Godavari offshore basin in the state with an estimated cost of Rs 5,700 crore. This project will contribute significantly in realising PM Modi's vision of reducing oil imports by 10 per cent by 2020, experts say.
Later in the day, while addressing a rally in Guntur, the Prime Minister said, "The Central government is building oil reserves in different places in the country so that the country does not face scarcity of fuel in difficult situations."
