After launching the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan' or the Clean Indian Campaign on October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the 'Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojna' on Saturday, under which each MP will adopt three villages and ensure their development.

Launching the scheme on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan, Prime Minister Modi said, "In accordance with the changing times schemes must be formulated and the speed of change must also increase. Ever since we attained Independence, all the governments have taken efforts for rural development and this effort must go on."

He added, "There are several villages that make us proud, but this also means that there is a lot more beyond government schemes. Schemes are for every village, but only few villages stood out because some people there had different ways of thinking."

Stating that irrespective of parties, MPs should keep working, Modi said, "Apart from his or her own village, MPs can select whichever village they want. The MP may belong to any party, but one has to keep working among people. MPs must adopt villages and work towards development. People in villages must have access to all basic amenities."

There are around 800 MPs, and if three model villages are made every year, by 2019, the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojna will reach about 2500 villages, Modi said. "I too have to select a village in my constituency Varanasi. I have received the guidelines regarding this and I will go there, discuss and decide. I toured for 40 years, visited 400 districts and got to see more than 5000 villages outside Gujarat,  that is why I know the ground reality."

"This is not a scheme about money. It is people driven and guided by people's participation, guided by MPs," Modi said. "Let us take interest and create an atmosphere where every person is proud of his or her village."
