A day ahead of the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) first anniversary, prime minister Narendra Modi, in an address at Mathura, harped on his government's social welfare policies and made a strong pro-poor pitch. PM Modi carefully chose Nagla Chandrabhan, the birthplace of Jan Sangh founder Deen Dayal Upadhyay, as the venue of the public rally to reflect the commitment to poor and also because Mathura was one of worst affected by unseasonal rains.

"If we wished, we could have celebrated one year of the government in Delhi or any other major city. But, I wanted to give you a report card of our work in Pandit Upadhyay's village," Modi said.

Curiously, the prime minister chose to use the term "bure din chale gaye" instead of using the wildly famous campaign catchphrase 'acche din aanewale hai' to emphasise on the achievements of the government. The PM, in fact, flipped the narrative of the Opposition, who is criticising the government's policies, and sought to accentuate the NDA's work with the 'bure din' of the UPA. "One year ago, the times were bad. Has the bad time not ended? Have we not the turned the tide? Have you heard of any scam?," said PM Modi.

He also went on to take a swipe at the Congress, "Some people are worried that they are seeing bad days. They are shouting hoarse as for the past 60 years they have ruled the country. We have broken their power circles in Delhi."

Earlier, before the prime minister arrived at the venue the crowd waited patiently in the sweltering heat to hear him speak. Around 50,000 people crammed the venue in the assembly constituency of Farah town. The crowd was frenzied and some even climbed up the shamianas to grab a glimpse of the prime minister. But, some were left disappointed as they expected the PM to speak on the Land Bill. "We thought that Modiji would speak on the Land Bill and clear doubts. We want the compensation for land acquisition to increase," said Krishna Singh, 35, a resident of Jhajar, Bulandahahar.
