At the convocation ceremony at Visva Bharati University and inauguration of Bangladesh Bhavan in Shantiniketan on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the two countries were experiencing a golden era of their relationship. The Prime Minister shared the dais with his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

He began his address in well-practised Bengali, expressing gratitude in being able to attend the event. “During my trip to Bangladesh, I found that Rabindranath Tagore songs are sung in its villages, while the poems of Kazi Nazrul Islam are recited in alleys of India,” he said.

He said India and Bangladesh were bound by cultures. “Mujibur Rahman [founding father of Bangladesh) is respected equally in India and eminent leaders such Swami Vivekananda are revered in Bangladesh ,” he continued, adding, “Bangabandhu (as Rahman was known) was an admirer of Tagore and the fight for freedom was in Bangladesh, but its inspiration was drawn from here.”

“Bangladesh had put in money to put up Bangladesh Bhavan,” he said, adding, “India too had shouldered the responsibility of renovating Rabindranath Tagore’s residence at Kustia in Bangladesh.”

Referring to the India-Bangladesh train service, he said the countries have managed to successfully address issues that had been pending for decades. “Connectivity was an issue since 1965. We have been working on it and have already started a Kolkata-Khulna AC Bandhan Express,” he said. The Prime Minister added that India would soon increase power supply to Bangladesh from 600 MW to 1100 MW.
