May 23 marks the completion of two years since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The party decided to mark the occasion with the launch of a theme song.

Singing the government's praises, literally

The song, which was uploaded on Friday on Twitter by Modi himself, boasts of the accomplishments of the BJP government in these past two years. The lyrics 'Mera Desh Badal Raha Hai... Aage Badh Raha Hai' translate into 'My country is transforming... constantly moving forward'. It also mentions how India is finally beginning to leave its past behind and moving ahead to achieve great heights.

The song goes on to mention the various 'accomplishments' of the government; the supply of cooking gas to rural areas, the government's support to the farmers through insurance, the 'Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao' andolan, enhancement of the skill base of the country's youth, construction of roads that connect villages to main cities, opportunities for business, support of banks, better rail travel and increase in employment opportunities.

The song, however, has a tone similar to another video that praised the Prime Minister.

Flashback to Pahlaj Nihalani's video

Head of the Central Board of Film Certification of India (CBFC), Pahlaj Nihalani had, back in November 2015, released a video in support of Narendra Modi. Calling the video 'supportive' might indeed be an understatement, as Nihalani went out of his way to accumulate substandard production values along with glorification of various stereotypes while at the same time suggesting that Modi might indeed have some supernatural characteristics.

The video plainly looked as though it was made especially to spread propaganda, although Nihalani at the time denied any such claim and said, "The song doesn't glorify anybody except the nation. It says 'Bharat ko Swachh banana hai, Jo Sapna dekha Bapu, Modi ne, Usse mil-jul kar Humein Sach kar Dikhana Hai'. So it talks about how we all should come together and work towards the betterment of the nation.”
