Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam on Saturday admitted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi played the role of a mediator and asked him to join hands with current Chief Minister E Palanisami

According to a report by The News Minute, Panneerselvam said he went to meet PM Modi who told him that when he met Jayalalitha in Chennai, she had told him a lot of things and requested Selvam to join back for the sake of the party.

Panneerselvam said that he decided to hold a designation only after PM Modi insisted him on taking a post.

However, he claimed that he never wished to hold any minister's portfolio when decided to join hands with the other faction.

The reaction has come close on the heels of the bitter exchanges between AIADMK and BJP in the recent past over the functioning of the government, especially after the RK Nagar poll debacle.

Independent candidate TTV Dhinakaran, who was sidelined from the AIADMK by the EPS and OPS faction, won the prestigious and much-sought-after assembly seat.

Dhinakaran was evicted from the party along with VK Sasikala following a deal between AIADMK's factions led by EPS former OPS, as they merged in August.

Following the RK Nagar debacle, E Palaniswami hit out at sidelined AIADMK leader TTV Dhinakaran for calling him a "betrayer" and alleged that the latter had used the "hawala formula" to win the RK Nagar bypoll recently.

CPI(M) made the prediction in August

Interestingly in August 2017, CPI(M) politburo member Prakash Karat termed the merger of AIADMK factions as opportunistic and alleged that the BJP was behind it.

"The opportunistic decision by the two factions, at the behest of BJP. will be rejected by the people of Tamil Nadu," he told reporters at the airport here.

The CPI(M) leader said that joining hands with 'communal forces' like BJP will be dangerous to AIADMK and also the people of Tamil Nadu, "who will totally reject this opportunism."
