Prime Minister Narendra Modi will today launch Rs 23,000-crore Purvanchal Expressway project in Azamgarh. Modi will lay the foundation stone of the expressway when he visits Azamgarh today as part of his two-day trip which will also cover Varanasi and Mirzapur.

The launch of the project has triggered a war of words between the ruling BJP and opposition Samajwadi Party with the latter claiming that the project is the brainchild of its leader and former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, who laid a foundation stone for the same stretch in December 2016.

Here is all you need to know about the Purvanchal Expressway project:

The six-lane expressway, which can be expanded to eight lanes, will provide a smooth ride between Lucknow and Ghazipur in eastern UP.

The 340-km-long Purvanchal Expressway will link nine districts of Eastern Uttar Pradesh cities, including PM's parliamentary Constituency Varanasi, directly with Lucknow and Delhi.

It will also be linked with the 302-km-long Lucknow-Agra Expressway and 165-km-long Yamuna Expressway from Agra to Delhi.

The expressway will connect districts of Barabanki, Amethi, Sultanpur, Faizabad, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh, Mau and Ghazipur – with Lucknow.

The Rs 23,349.97 crore project will be completed in record 36 months.

The Adityanth government has already got a loan or Rs 12,000 crore sanctioned from the Punjab National Bank to execute the project.

A compensation of Rs 6,500 crore have so far been disbursed to farmers whose lands were acquired for the project.

A cartel of five companies has been given the job of executing the project, divided into eight phases. The UP Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) is the nodal agency to monitor the work.

Interestingly, the foundation stone for the Purvanchal Expressway was laid by then Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on December 22, 2016.

Both the BJP and the SP seemed to be trying to take credit for the project keeping the 2019 general elections in mind.
