PM Modi inaugurates Durga Puja in West Bengal, urges people to follow 'do gaj ki doori'

Hailing the people from Bengal for contributing immensely to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday addressed the state as five-day celebrations for Durga Puja begin.

In his address through video conferencing, PM Modi paid tributes to the icons of Bengal and said this festival reflects the unity and strength of India.

"Whenever the need was felt in India's history, Bengal has always led the way for India and shown the path. There have been many renowned people who have come from Bengal and have contributed immensely in guiding the nation is the right direction," PM Modi said as he opened celebrations for Durga Puja in Kolkata's Salt Lake.

He also spoke in Bengali to wish the people of the State.

"The festival of Durga Puja is a festival that reflects the unity and strength of India. It is also a reflection of the traditions and culture that comes from Bengal," PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister took part in the commencement of Durga Puja celebrations in Kolkata, West Bengal, via video link. He addressed the people of the state, being telecast in every booth of the state's 294 constituencies, following social distancing norms.

"We are celebrating Durga Puja in times of COVID-19, all devotees have shown exemplary restrain. The number of people might be less but the grandeur and devotion are the same. The happiness and joy are still boundless. This is the real Bengal," he said.

Modi also urged everyone to ensure 'do gaj ki doori' and wear masks during celebrations at all times. He added that such is the power of devotion that it felt, he is not in Delhi but is present among people in West Bengal.

"From opening Jan Dhan accounts for 22 crore women, giving soft loans to them under the Mudra Yojana, to launching Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao initiative, granting permanent commission to women in the armed forces and extending maternity leave from 12 to 26 weeks, we have taken a number of steps for their empowerment," he added.
