The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for raising the Land Acquisition Bill in his 'Mann Ki Baat' programme, saying the latter made it very clear that his government is pro-poor, pro-farmer and would not take any step that goes against their interest.

BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli said Prime Minister Modi was due to speak on the farmers' issues because the Land Acquisition Bill has been in the news and a lot of misconceptions are being created about it.

"He (Prime Minister Narendra Modi)  perhaps chose to focus on it and clear that this government is pro-poor, this government is pro-farmer and this government won't take any step that goes against their interest and he explained what are the reasons behind it that when the government acquires land how do you get canals, how do you get roads, schools and job facilities. He gave the big picture," he added.

Prime Minister Modi earlier in the day said that the states could continue with the old law if they have an objection to amendments in the Land Bill.

"We felt that there was a need to bring some amendments in the law, we only wish for welfare of people and villages. If states have objection to amendments in Land Acquisition Bill, they can continue with the old law," Prime Minister Modi said while addressing the farmers in his 'Mann ki baat' programme.

"I assure all my farmer brothers that I will alert all state governments as well as all departments in the Central Government over the issues that you have raised. Land acquisition law was brought 120 years ago. Political leaders who are today posing as your well wishers, protesting against this bill, have also governed under this law," he added.

Prime Minister Modi also requested the farmers to keep away from statements made to earn political benefits.

"Sometimes, people who make laws sitting in air conditioned rooms do not know the ground reality in villages. I appeal to all my farmers' brothers and sisters to keep away from statements made to earn political benefits," said Prime Minister Modi.

"We only have a right to govern if we pay attention on small issues as well. Farmers have mentioned in their letters issues related to farming, but many other issues like lack of clean drinking water. I'm standing with you at this sad hour; I assure you that the government will provide assistance with complete sensitivity at this hour of the need," he said.

"I have said in Parliament, that if someone still feels some changes are required, we are willing to take up suggestions. We are emphasizing on health of mother land as well, which is why we've started soil health card scheme. I assure you that I will not break your trust," he added.
