Even before Prime Minister Narendra Modi could begin his monthly radio broadcast Mann Ki Baat on the New Year’s Eve, this time aimed at the youth between 18 to 25 years, Congress Vice President, Rahul Gandhi accused him of making empty promises.
Taking a jibe at Modi supporters by calling them Bhakts, Rahul questioned the government’s failure to utilise the money allotted for the Smart Cities project and to roll out the infrastructure and create jobs which the Modi government promised two years back.
"Dear Modi bhakts, of 9,860 crores for the Smart Cities only 7per cent has been used. China is out competing us while your master gives us empty slogans. The Smart City Mission was launched on June 25, 2015 with an aim to develop the basic infrastructure of chosen cities to world class level.
The project involves delivering assured water and power supply, sanitation and solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transport, seamless IT connectivity, e-governance and citizen participation. The development of Smart Cities was expected to generate lot of employment in multiple sectors but the slow take off of the scheme has not yielded the desired results.
The YouTube video of ‘Shenzhen’, a city in China also known as ‘Silicon Valley of hardware’ shows how China by focussing on hardware innovation is taking over the technology market in India as well.
Shenzhen has wide array of manufacturing industries and as a hardware hub where patents are not created to fight copycats and exert legal pressure, but are used for trades between companies to share information. The Chinese counterfeit consumer goods industry, which are known as ‘Shanzhai’ in China, has been a key for domestic skill and job creation.
