Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed his strong support for closer economic ties with Japan and conveyed his greetings to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for his recent victory in general elections.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed his strong support for closer economic ties with Japan and conveyed his greetings to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for his recent victory in general elections.

Modi conveyed his support when visiting Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida, who arrived in New Delhi on Friday on a two-day visit, called on the Prime Minister and discussed issues of mutual interest. Modi conveyed his congratulations to Abe on his recent victory in the general elections in Japan, an official statement said here. "Prime Minister Modi expressed his strong support for closer economic ties with Japan. He referred to the successful operationalization of "Japan Plus" mechanism to facilitate Japanese businesses in India as a symbol of the importance India attaches to relations with Japan," the statement said.

He also welcomed the progress in key areas of bilateral cooperation since his visit to Japan in September last year, it said. According to the statement, Modi referred to his close personal friendship with Abe and reiterated that India-Japan relationship was close to his heart and he attaches the highest importance to it. Modi recalled his successful visit to Japan last year and his meeting with Abe on the sidelines of G-20 Summit in Brisbane last November and said "he looked forward to strengthening the bilateral relationship in the years to come."

He highlighted the growing business opportunities in India and referred to the increasing number of Japanese business operating in India. Joint production of amphibious aircraft US-2, removing hurdles to finalise a civil nuclear deal, enhancing maritime security cooperation and implementing several mega infrastructure projects will top the agenda during strategic talks between the Foreign Ministers of India and Japan on Saturday .
