Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Delhi on Saturday morning after completing a five-day tour to three African countries where he held bilateral meetings with several world leaders including presidents of China and Russia. Modi was received at Delhi by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in the early hours on Saturday.

"PM @narendramodi landed in Delhi this morning. EAM @SushmaSwaraj welcomed him at the airport. PM returned after historic bilateral visits to Rwanda and Uganda as well as the BRICS Summit in South Africa. These visits have deepened India's friendship with African countries," PMO tweeted.

The Prime Minister departed from Air Force Base Waterkloof in Johannesburg on Friday, after attending the 10th annual BRICS summit.

As part of his five-day official tour, Modi first visited Kigali, Rwanda on Monday where he held wide-ranging talks with President Paul Kagame and the two sides signed a defence cooperation agreement. He is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Rwanda.

On his visit, Modi gifted 200 cows to villagers as a part of the Rwandan Government's Girinka Programme. The function to mark the handing over of cows was held at Rweru Model village, in the presence of President Kagame. India also extended a USD 200 million lines of credit to Rwanda for its economic development.

Later, Modi arrived in Kampala, Uganda where he held wide-ranging talks with President Yoweri Museveni and also addressed the country's Parliament. While addressing the Parliament of Uganda, the Prime Minister said that India felt "proud" to be Africa's partner as India's story of freedom struggle was "intimately" linked to the continent.

India extended two lines of credit worth nearly USD 200 million to Uganda in energy infrastructure, agriculture and dairy sectors.

On the last leg of his trip, Modi on Wednesday visited South Africa where he attended the BRICS summit and also held bilateral meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African President Ramaphosa, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other leaders.

BRICS is a grouping of emerging nations formed in 2009 and comprises five countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Representing over 40% of the world's population, the block's growth rates surpass those of the developed countries of the G7.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Prime Minister Modi stressed on the need for BRICS cooperation for global portable social security framework, intended to benefit nearly 215 million people who were working outside their nations.

On the second day of the summit, Modi said that India intended to closely work with BRICS nations on the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The Prime Minister also held separate bilateral meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the summit.

On the last day of the BRICS summit, Prime Minister Modi re-affirmed India's support to African countries. He emphasised the need for fostering peace and development in the African counties.
