Former Samajwadi party leader Amar Singh on Friday heaped praises on Prime Minister Narendra Modi terming him as an "honest" person but said that his good initiatives go in vain due to "controversial statements" made by some BJP leaders.

Talking to reporters, Singh said, "Modi is an honest person. But people of the country are upset with him as they had lot of expectations from him which have not been not met. His brother is a clerk and mother lives in a small house. Opposition could only find Rs 10 lakh suit issue against him," he said.

Singh said that given a chance he would meet RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, though he added that the country would never become Congress and RSS 'mukt' as both will remain here.

"The country can never become Congress and RSS 'mukt'. Both will remain there," he said.

Singh blamed BJP leaders for issuing controversial statements saying because of this Modi's good initiatives are going in vain.

"His good initiatives go in vain due to his men who issue different statements. He has not only got votes of Hindus but also Muslims," Singh said.

Speaking about his relations with Amitabh Bachchan, Singh said he had differences with Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh had "apologised" to him.
