Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah has summoned Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb over his controversial statements.

According to reports, the Chief Minister has been summoned to meet Modi and Shah on May 2 in the national capital.

Over the last couple of days, Biplab has made several controversial statements triggering widespread criticism, even after PM Modi asked party leaders to refrain from making "irresponsible" statements, saying such comments hurt the party's image.

In an interaction with the party's MPs, MLAs and other representatives, Modi had said that leaders at times jump to make statements in front of the media and end up providing "masala" (fodder to controversies). There is no point then blaming it for controversies, he said.

"Don't blame the media. It is doing its job. It's our job to not get entangled in everything and guide the nation on every issue by standing in front of the TV. Those with the responsibility of speaking on the issue will do it," he said.

Earlier last week,  Biplab Kumar Deb's comment that international beauty contests are a farce and questioning the crowning of Diana Hayden as "Miss World" in 1997 drew criticism from various quarters, including beauty pageant contestants, social workers and his political opponents.

On Saturday, Deb said that the youth runs after political parties for several years to get a government job and wastes the vital time of their life, had the same youth instead of running after parties set up a paan shop he would have by now had a bank balance of Rs 5 lakhs," said Deb.

On Friday, at an event for Civil Services Day in Agartala, he said that in the past while people from the 'humanities background took the civil service exams, but now even doctors and engineers appear for the same’. He also said that civil engineers ought to opt for civil services, not mechanical engineers.

Earlier this month, Deb, an arts graduate, had claimed that Internet and satellite communication existed in the days of Mahabharata, which had drawn criticism from Twitterati, intellectuals and his political adversaries.
