Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to address a meeting of NDA MPs on July 16, a day ahead of voting in the Presidential election. He has also lined up two other meetings on the day, with an eye on ensuring a smooth monsoon session of the Parliament. The government, it seems, doesn’t want to take chances as Congress is bent on uniting the opposition and rake up issues related to implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Modi will be seeking the cooperation of the opposition parties at an all-party meeting convened on the day. Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan is also expected to call a meeting of the leaders of various parties, which is also expected to be attended by the PM.

NDA’s Presidential candidate Ramnath Kovind will be meeting the supporting MPs in groups and also attend the NDA parliamentary party meeting to seek votes.

There will be no business in Parliament on the opening day. Proceedings in both the Houses will be adjourned for a day due to death of sitting members Vinod Khanna (BJP), Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave, and Telangana Congress MP Pallavi Govardhan Reddy.

The Congress on Saturday made its intentions clear, saying it will use the session to raise issues related to traders and artisans, who have been badly hit by the GST. At an AICC briefing, senior Congress leader and lawyer Kapil Sibal narrated plight of every section of businessmen, even the big exporters and the transport companies who fear their capital will be locked up in the input credits. He said GST is a second blow to the common man by this government after the demonetisation. The small traders and artisans whose annual turnover is less than Rs 20 lakh will have to register if they have to remain in business and they will be lost in filling up the forms, spend on computers and pay hefty fee to the chartered accountant they never required all these years, Sibal pointed out. He also ridiculed PM Modi for calling the GST a “good and simple tax”.
