Former finance minister P Chidambaram accused the Narendra Modi-led government of hoodwinking the public by manufacturing fake data, especially on jobs, and doing little to boost growth on Monday.

He added that the Modi government has done very little to keep the growth engine of India switched on.

In a scathing attack, he said, "The promise of giving jobs that brought Modi to power will be the main issue on which people will vote against Modi in the 2019 elections."

While he delivered a speech at the Indian Youth Congress session, he quoted numbers, saying that the majority of youth aged between 18 to 22 had voted for Modi in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls as he had claimed that he would be creating 2 crore jobs.

"People genuinely believed him. But now, people are angry as jobs are getting destroyed. Three of the biggest Software giants are giving pink slips to their employees. No new industries are coming up. Have you seen any advertisement in newspapers of bhumi pujan of a big company lately?" asked Chidambaram.

He laid out the details of the losses in the job market including the MSME sectors, government departments and software companies.

"This government has killed the environment. Demonetisation and GST, referred to as the Gabbar Singh Tax by Congress president, have practically killed majority of the micro, small and drastically affected the medium industries."

Millions of jobs can be created if the government applies its mind and common sense, said Chidambaram adding that there are one lakh schools for class 1 to 5 in the country that employ a single teacher and adding four teachers, one for each class, can give employment to a total of 4 lakh people.

Chidambaram said the Congress, if it comes to power, would certainly not take foolish decisions like demonetisation and would concentrate on incentivising MSME sector and exports instead of benefiting the existing 10 biggest business houses.
