Prime minister Narendra Modi has announced a Rs500 crore relief package for flood-hit Gujarat. Modi made the announcement after he conducted an aerial survey of affected areas and held a review meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

Besides assistance from the state government, the PM has promised aid from the PM’s relief fund to affected families.

The PM held a review meeting with CM Vijay Rupani, deputy CM Nitin Patel, former CM Anandiben Patel and senior state officials at Ahmedabad airport. He also conducted an aerial survey of Banaskantha and Patan districts which have been the worst-hit.

The PM said, “The central government will give Rs500 crore for the Gujarat state calamity relief fund (CRF). I also announce additional compensation of Rs2,00,000 to the dependents of those who lost their lives in the deluge and Rs 50,000 for those injured. This amount will be given from the PM Relief Fund.”

He said he had directed the administration to conduct an assessment of damage to property as well as review agricultural losses so that the process of disbursing compensation could be expedited. “I would also direct crop insurance companies to make payment to farmers who sustained agricultural losses due to floods,” he added.

The PM also praised Gujaratis, saying they were a courageous community and knew how to turn disasters into opportunity.

He also lauded the efforts of various organisations engaged in relief and rescue work.

Dy CM’s appeal

Following several photographs and videos of dam bursts doing the rounds, deputy CM Nitin Patel, on Tuesday appealed to people not to spread such rumours on social media. Patel appealed to people to check the veracity of updates that crop up on social media and not to panic. Patel conducted a review meeting of the flood situation on Tuesday morning, in lieu of CM Rupani who was in New Delhi to attend the oath ceremony of president-elect Ram Nath Kovind.

Satellite survey to assess agri losses

State agriculture minister Chiman Sapariya said since manual survey was time-consuming and could delay the process of compensation payment, the state had decided to use satellite image to assess agricultural losses. He said as soon the cloud cover cleared, they would start the satellite survey.
