Jawaharlal Nehru University Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar on Wednesday appealed to politicians visiting the campus to not "politicise our university" and let the administration do its work.

Speaking to ANI on Congress fact-finding team and DMK leader Kanimozhi's visit to JNU, Kumar said, "Please don't politicise our university. Please leave us alone and let us do our work."

His comments came after a meeting with the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Kumar met MHRD Secretary Amit Khare to apprise about current campus situation.

On the issue of hostel fee hike which has put the administration on a clash path with the JNU Student Union, he said, "We may even approach the alumni of our university to create a fund to help all such students who come from poor sections of the society."

Commenting on celebrities visit to the university, he said, "I would like to ask all those great personalities coming to support agitators, what about thousands of students&teachers who are deprived of their rights of doing research and teaching? Why can't you stand with them?"

His comments came a day after Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone visited the campus in solidarity with students who were injured in the attack by masked goons on Sunday.

Earlier, Kumar to told the top ministry official in the meeting that the last date for student registration for the Winter Semester 2020 without fine has also been extended up to January 12, 2020.

As part of this registration process about 3300 students have since deposited fee for online registration, a ministry release said.

The situation in the campus is presently peaceful and the university administration has appealed to all the stakeholders to maintain peace in the campus and not to get provoked by any misinformation, the VC told the MHRD Secretary.

University authorities were advised by the Ministry to make all-out efforts for restoration of the normal functioning of the University at the earliest, the MHRD statement said.
