The CPM said on Tuesday that it is in touch with other parties to bring an impeachment motion in Parliament against Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra, 11 days after four top Supreme Court judges revolted against him.
"The CPM is discussing with other Opposition parties the possibility of bringing an impeachment motion against the CJI," party leader Sitaram Yechury said. The Budget Session is set to commence on January 29.
So far no judge has been impeached in India, though proceedings have been initiated against some. In the latest case, Justice Soumitra Sen of the Calcutta High Court had tendered his resignation in 2011 after the Rajya Sabha passed the motion to impeach him.
Justice V Ramaswami was the first judge against whom impeachment proceedings were initiated in 1993.
These were cases involved allegations of financial impropriety and extravagance. The current controversy in the Supreme Court involving the CJI, is however, about an allegation that the he was not following established precedents in allocation of cases.
