'Smart City' Jaipur struggles without any internet access

Millions of Jaipur residents and thousands of tourists in the Pink City experienced an 'internet free' weekend as administration suspended mobile internet services since dawn of Saturday. It was not just social media platforms and bulk messages that remain restrained, digital wallets and card swiping machines were also rendered useless at a number of petrol pumps and malls. The routine life of 'Smart City Jaipur' remained affected all day long as administration ordered 'temporary suspension of telecom services' following protest and arson at Ramganj area of city late on Friday night.

Those depending on mobile cab services as well as tourists who count on their mobile maps while exploring the City faced difficulties. Many of the city residents were also delayed for offices as they had to stop at ATM counters for cash.

The administration, however, defended the ban on data services as a necessary measure. "It is essential to prevent spread of rumours from further flaring up the already tense situation. We admit that the public had to face a few difficulties, but it was in favour of maintaining law and order in the city at large," Rajeshwar Singh, divisional commissioner of Jaipur, told DNA.

The authorities claim that such orders are made only after due consideration of facts. "It is after the local police and district administration make a request for such a ban that the restrictions are ordered under Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017," adds a senior administrative officer.

Calling for a Ban

Following protest and arson in Ramganj area on Friday night, Jaipur administration suspended internet connection in the city from 6 am on Saturday to 11:59 pm Sunday. 
It also restrained digital wallets and card swiping machines in various malls and petrol pumps, as well we social media and bulk messages.
