Prospective pilgrims can no longer visit the Kartarpur Sahib Gurudwara in Pakistan as registrations will be suspended from Sunday midnight in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the Home Ministry announced on Sunday.

"In wake of COVID19 India outbreak, as a precautionary measure to contain and control the spread of the disease, the travel and registration for Sri Kartarpur Sahib is temporarily suspended from 00:00 hours on March 16, 2020, till further orders," ANI qouted a home ministry spokesperson as saying.

Kartarpur Sahib Corridor,  a 4.7-km passage, connects the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Punjab's Gurdaspur with Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur in Pakistan.

India and Pakistan had on October 24 signed the agreement connecting Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Punjab's Gurdaspur with Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur in Pakistan. With the signing of this agreement, a formal framework was laid down for operationalisation of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor.

Moreover, the government suspended passenger movement through international border points with Pakistan from 12AM of March 16 in view of the epidemic. Hence, the move to suspend registrations for the Kartarpur Sahib Gurudwara in Pakistan can be seen as part of a larger initiative to restrict the movement of passengers to and from Pakistan.

Apart from Pakistan, the Home Ministry had ordered to put a restriction on all types of passenger movements through all the immigration land check posts located India-Bangladesh, India-Nepal, India-Bhutan and India-Myanmar borders with effect from 12AM on March 15.

In India, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases across the country is 93, with two deaths till now. The Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare under the central government has launched a helpline number: +91-11-23978046 for coronavirus-related inquiry and support. There are also separate helpline numbers for the different states and union territories.
