A Public Interest Litigation filed in the Bombay High Court, has sought directions to the Union Government to frame transparent policies for appointment of heads and chairpersons of institutes like Film and Television Institute of India. Students of the premier institution in Pune are on strike opposing the appointment of its Chairman Gajendra Chauhan.

The PIL filed by Advocate Vineet Dhanda, who in September had moved the Supreme Court on the same grounds came to be disposed off without any directions.

In his petition Dhanda says directions are required to be given to the government to make a positive effort in ending the present crisis between the students of FTII and its faculty. Further directions are sort to the government of Maharashtra to protect the interest and security of those students who are willing to attend the classes but are being prevented from attending by the anti-social elements.

A division bench of Justice VM Kanade and Justice Dr Shalini Phansalkar Joshi on Monday issued notices returnable by two weeks to Union/State government and Vikas Urs, leader FTII students Association.

The petition urges that students and government are not ending the crisis through dialogue and this is disturbing the entire nation and educational system. The right to education is an important fundamental right and government is duty bound to safeguard it, it says.

The plea also says that  government is duty bound to prevent such kind of strikes as the students are nowhere concerned with the politics of vendetta which in present situation is happening. The government is not able to control and few students are hell bent on destroying the esteemed institution like FTII which has brought laurels to our country.
