Petrol will cost more in Goa from mid-night as the state government has increased Value Added Tax (VAT) from 10 to 15%.Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar in the budget presented last week had hiked the VAT on petrol.

The current price of petrol is Rs 55.24, which will increase to Rs 57.75. Parsekar had told reporters after presenting the budget that VAT will be slashed if the petrol price crosses Rs 60 mark. The BJP-led government which came to power in 2012 had slashed down the petrol prices by Rs 11 by abolishing the VAT.

The then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, in last August, imposed a VAT of 3.5 on petrol, which was hiked to 10% by Parsekar, his successor. The state government expects to earn Rs 100 crore with the additional VAT.
