An application was moved in a court here today seeking slapping of sedition charge on Uttar Pradesh minister Azam Khan for his comments on the funding of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's birthday bash.

The court has fixed December 16 as the next date of hearing. The applicant, Brijesh Kumar Mishra, has said in his petition that the statement made by the minister are seditious and the court should direct the police to register a case against him.

Mulayam celebrated his 75th birthday on November 21 and the "extravagant" celebrations drew flak from several quarters with many questioning the source of funds. The criticism was met with a sarcastic response from Azam.

When questioned about the funding for the grand event, Azam said that the money has come from Taliban, a terror group and Dawood Ibrahim, an underworld don. "Why does it matter where the money for celebrations is coming from? Some have come from Taliban, some from Abu Salem, some from Dawood(Ibrahim), some from terrorists...," he said sarcastically.
