A seven-month-old has allegedly been strangled to death by his mother here on Friday, allegedly out of poverty. Officials have ruled out poverty being the raison d'être for the murder.

The accused Rukhsar had three children in her husband, Shaheed, who stays in Mumbai. Thanks to some dispute, Shaheed had stopped sending money to Rukhsar, and for the last four-five months the mother and the kids were having a hand to mouth existence.

Some time back, Rukhsar's youngest child had developed blood infection. Rukhsar took the child to a nearby hospital where the doctors referred her to a better hospital in Agra. Selling jewellery, Rukhsar paid for the treatment that cost her Rs 90,000. Reportedly, for the last few days, the family was left with no money.

On Friday, Rukhsar gave milk to the infant and put him to sleep. According to a statement given by Rukhsar's other children, their mother had strangled the infant to death. Police's post-mortem report also attests to the same. According to District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar, "The infant has been strangled to death. All speculations about poverty being the cause of death are false." Accordingly, the accused has been detained.

Reportedly, the victim's grandmother had approached the police on Wednesday. She claimed she had notified them about a possible murder of her grandson. "However, they asked me to approach them once the murder takes place," the grandmother claimed.
