Crisis in People's Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Tuesday after the rebels rejected the new damage control measures by the top leaders  to save the party from an imminent split.

People's Democratic Party (PDP) vice-president and Mehbooba Mufti’s maternal uncle Sartaj Madni and five office bearers including four general secretaries and a treasurer had put in their papers on Monday in an apparent bid to stem the rot and woo the rebels back to party fold.

"Unfortunately Mehbooba Mufti made PDP go NC way by promoting family rule. She made a blatant statement by appointing kith and kin on important party posts. Resignations won't undo the grave folly. Damage cant be undone!" tweeted Imran Reza Ansari, former sports minister and PDP rebel.

Six rebels including four MLAs—Imran Reza Ansari, Abid Ansari, Abdul Majid Padder and Javaid Baigh—and two MLCs ---Saifuddin Bhat and Yasir Reshi – have openly raised a banner of revolt against Mehbooba Mufti for what they called turning party into a family fiefdom.

The resignations of office bearers come amid renewed backroom parleys over the government formation post-Amarnath yatra in Jammu and Kashmir.

Insiders said BJP is exploring options of having the first Hindu chief minister from Jammu region in the state. There are also reports that former separatist leader and People Conference chairman Sajad Lone may get the deputy chief minister's post. If sources are to be believed that there will be another deputy chief minister from the PDP rebels to make the government formation an inclusive exercise.

A political formation requires 44 members for simple majority to form the government in Jammu and Kashmir.  In the 87 member Legislative assembly, the political formation needs 44 members for simple majority to form the government. PDP is the single largest party with 28 members followed by BJP with 25 MLAs. National Conference has 15 and Congress 12 members in the House. Former separatist leader led People’s Conference has two MLAs while CPIM and PDF has one member each. Rest are independents.
